Insta360 Go 3S Review: Is the Small Camera Really as Powerful as They Say?

The Insta360 Go series is a tiny, thumb-sized camera that can make other action cameras look positively bulky and offers truly different possibilities for creators. It can be worn surprisingly discreetly on the body – usually on the chest thanks to a magnet and accompanying pendant, and, in my testing, made capturing personal perspectives remarkably easy.

Presentation of the Insta360 Go 3S

The Insta360 Go 3S, while not called "Go 4K" despite its 4K capability and fourth iteration status, is notable for its ActionPod case. This case, similar in size to a typical action camera, has a full touchscreen. The camera itself, when detached, only has a single indicator LED, while the touchscreen allows easy access to all the features expected of a modern action camera.

Design and handling of the Insta360 Go 3S

Earlier versions of the 'Go' series used an AirPod-style case and relied on a phone as a monitor. The change this time mainly concerns the camera and not the ActionPod case. The Insta360 Go 3S offers a unique approach to action camera. In its case, it looks like a GoPro or equivalent, with a folding rear screen, ideal for vloggers.

The camera also offers all the image stabilization features associated with the best premium action cameras, including horizon stabilization. The ability to detach the camera and attach it to your clothing is particularly innovative. The box continues to work, providing a live preview on the screen, effectively turning the box into a remote monitor.

Performance of the Insta360 Go 3S

In use, the camera is brilliant but sometimes confusing. The single LED indicator can be confusing between charging and saving. The software system is responsive, although it takes a few seconds to wake up. Optically, a wider field of view would have been appreciated, even if it meant recording with a fish-eye effect. However, Insta360 seems to have preferred to eliminate this effect to facilitate the rapid output of videos for social networks.

Insta360 Go 3S video and photo samples

Videos show that the camera handles daylight well, but struggles in low light. Photos benefit from the arrival of RAW+Jpeg format and higher image resolutions, making this camera more useful than its predecessors.

Overall verdict on the Insta360 Go 3S

It's a great device, which most action camera customers can now seriously consider as an alternative to traditional models like the DJI Osmo Action or GoPro. Although it has some limitations, including a relatively narrow field of view, it meets the needs of most users, ranging from quick TikToks to serious filmmaking.
